Construction of New Customs Headquarters in Niamey Begins

Niger Launches Major Government Building Project

The Government of Niger has officially launched the construction of a new headquarters for the Directorate General of Customs (DGD) in Niamey. The foundation stone was laid during an official ceremony led by Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine.

This major public infrastructure project aims to modernize administrative facilities and improve working conditions for customs officials while enhancing the efficiency of public services.

The construction of the new customs headquarters also reflects Niger’s commitment to strengthening its institutional infrastructure and supporting economic development.

A Modern Administrative Building in Niamey

The new customs headquarters will be built on a site covering approximately 8,715 square meters. The building will be a 10-story modern administrative complex designed to centralize several customs departments currently located in different areas of the capital.

Once completed, the building will include:

  • 151 offices

  • 10 meeting rooms

  • A conference hall with around 260–280 seats

  • A server and technical room

  • Indoor and outdoor parking facilities

  • A customs museum

  • A mosque

  • Cafeterias and sports facilities

  • A backup generator system

  • A 50 kW solar photovoltaic installation

The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Improving Working Conditions and Public Services

Currently, several customs services in Niamey operate from different buildings, creating logistical and administrative challenges. The new headquarters will allow all departments to operate in one centralized location.

This modern infrastructure will help:

  • Improve coordination between departments

  • Increase operational efficiency

  • Provide better services to businesses and citizens

  • Enhance working conditions for customs officers

According to government officials, strengthening the customs administration is essential for improving revenue collection and supporting the country’s economic development.

Supporting Regional Trade and Economic Cooperation

The customs administration plays a key role in regulating trade flows and protecting the national economy. The new headquarters will support Niger’s efforts to improve customs management and strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries.

Officials also emphasized that improved customs infrastructure will contribute to facilitating trade within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

By investing in modern administrative infrastructure, Niger aims to create more efficient public institutions and support long-term economic growth.

Conclusion

The construction of the new Customs Headquarters in Niamey represents an important step in the modernization of Niger’s public administration infrastructure. Once completed, the facility will provide a modern working environment for customs officials while improving the efficiency of services provided to businesses and citizens.

This project highlights the growing demand for modern administrative buildings across Africa and reflects the increasing investment in government infrastructure projects in the region.
